In windowed mode, you get more out of the 16:10 part of the display because the menu bar moves out of it and up into the extra pixels. Please note that defining 2560x1080 at 60Hz in SwitchResX is of no use: the Mac does already know that the monitor wants this resolution, but the Mac has. I've got a widescreen monitor (LG 25UM56-P) that runs at 2560x1080, but unsurprisingly my best resolution option is standard, stretched 1080p. Why would Apple change the aspect ratio to a weird number like 16:10.34? Well, if we look at the 16:10 subset of that area, it's 3456x2160. Go to System Preferences and open SwitchResX. Long story short, I just successfully installed El Capitan 10.11.1 on my desktop. ![]()
